Road Trip Recap

WORKOUT:
80 minutes of Yoga

Sometimes I have a hard time wrapping my brain around Yoga being a "workout." I am trying to incorporate it more to focus on stretching and relaxing my muscles. Doesn't it always feel so good after you finish? I am all loosey goosey now. I think it is all worth it for the Savasana at the end... that is the BEST part.

Driving through Colorado and Kansas was new countryside for me. Colorado was... um... not that exciting. Sorry if you live there. Kansas on the other hand was beautiful! I got to see the stereo-typical view of the grassy fields with the lone windmill which was great but then the greenery and tree filled part was so pretty too! The sky really IS bigger out there. It felt very "All American."

We decided to grab a rental for the journey which I am so glad we did. First of all, the Charger has a LOT more get up than the Honda plus it was pretty fun to drive. And not having to wash all the bugs off your car and have to deal with cleaning it all out once you get home... priceless.

The boys were in the back for a lot of time which was funny since they were a little more squished than us girlies would have been.

They were in technology HEAVEN though back there. There was a laptop, iPad, cell phones apps and movies going like the WHOLE time. The amount of chargers for the electronic gadgets we had in the car was ridiculous.

Wendy's was eaten not once but TWICE on the trip over. It was kind of an accident. First time was legit...

But the second time it happened to be one of the ONLY places in the dinky town we stopped in for dinner. I planned some meals out ahead of time so I missed out on the burger binge but I secretly think they loved it.

Ben told me he had a hamburger the first time and a chicken sandwich the second so that was balanced right?

I packed a salad for lunch and put the separate toppings and dressing in plastic baggies so they wouldn't get soggy.

During Wendy's trip #2, I had Wheaties with bananas and Almond Milk. I don't know how I cut up my banana and got it all in there without spilling anything while we were on the move. It might not look cramped in this photo but there was like nowhere to put anything.

I also started reading The Long Run, which so far is pretty incredible. I am a sucker for a good inspirational story.

Road trips are fun until you hit that point where all of a sudden you just need to be OUT of the car. Usually for me that is when I am super tired and can't stay asleep because I can't get comfy. Fortunately we got to the parents house not too long after that.

If you HAD to have fast food on a trip, where would you choose to stop???
Dietary restrictions aside, I LOVE me some Taco Bell. Basically I could just eat a whole Nachos Bell Grande myself and be happy. Yum!

Are you a good long distance driver???
I usually last about 3 hours and then I am pooped. Time for a nap. Ben always gives me a hard time about that because he usually ends up driving all the rest of the way. Opps! I am proud to say I pulled my weight this time, probably because Heather and I were chatting it up in the front seats.

  1. Before I got married I used to drive lots of hours and hundreds of miles on the highway doing road trips.

Apparently, ?? , since I got married, I don't know how to drive anymore. Tee hee. So I sing to him to keep myself amused.

  2. I have the same problem with yoga as a workout, oh well. At least we're not alone.

Your trip looks so fun (if a little cramped for the boys). If I had to chose fast food, it'd totally be Taco Bell because they are 1. delicious and 2. really the only fast food with viable vegetarian options.

  3. I love roadtrips but I must admit you guys do look a little cramped with 5 people. I think my favorite thing about road trips is admittedly the snacks. oops!

Taco Bell is also my guilty pleasure. The funny thing is I don't think I've been there in well over a year.

  4. WOW. I am so impressed with how well you did eating on your trip! I totally just threw all of my healthy eating out the window on my trip this weekend and ate whatever I wanted. It was nice but today I feel tired, sluggish and am craving my veggies and fruit :)

I used to eat fast food ALL the time. Sad but true. Wendys and T-bell are my absolute favorites. I do not miss them as much as I thought I would though. If I get a chance to go out to eat I usually try to make it count by going somewhere that is worth it.

I LOVE roadtrips...but this past weekend was way TOO much traveling for me...haha. 4 different flights and 8 hours roundtrip to my brother's school. Wow. I am exhausted :) I usually get excited though and think of it as a little adventure! Glad you had such a good trip! hope to see you soon :)

  6. I love taco bell... omigosh.. haven't had it in forever!!! Nachoes Bell Grande and a soft taco supreme ... died and gone to heaven.

And i am not a good long distance driver or passenger. I fall asleep super easy in the car... and i get the worst cabin fever. Super grouchy!!! :) which is why I'd rather fly. ;)

  7. Fast food choices on a road trip...typically Subway is first choice, then Wendys, Chick-Fela, yum!
I don't mind long road trips, except that my knees get really cramped so I always feel like I need to stretch when I get out of the car!

  8. If you want to make your Yoga workout a sweat filled experience there are two things you need to do. One, work out in room that is warm. So if you don't want to turn the heater on, get a space heater that blows warm air. Second, you can warm up your body even more by proper breathing. Always breathe in and out through your nose, but while pushing out all the hair and making a "ha" sound but with your mouth closed. (if that makes sense) I have done many yoga work outs and sweated through two layers of shirts. I have an awesome book if you want to borrow it!

  9. Yoga I have a hard time doing it. It seems to me to be to slow. I would rather do pilates it is a little faster. I dont do good at road trips. After 5 hr I am going crazy and we better get home soon. So needless to say we dont do a lot of vacation. I can get about eat anywhere now days.. I use to be so picky I would take my food where I went . But not now days.

  11. Way to stay healthy even on a road trip, I'm impressed! I think I would have just caved and had Wendy's!
I'm not a good long distance driver. I always offer but an hour in and I'm bored.

  14. I LOVE RD trips!! We used to take them all the time as a kid. My younger siblings and parents and sister in law and her kiddos are all on a camper rd trip from Vermont to Texas and I'm so totally jealous. My other half hates being in the car so our rd trips are few and far between these days. pooey.

Yours looked so fun! And I love that you brought your own food!!

  15. I'd pick Chic-fil-A, but Taco Bell might be a close second. Glad I found your blog. :)

  16. I'm not a big fan of long road trips but I've only done them with my 4 kids in tow so that may be a big reason why! I'm so impressed with your healthy eating while traveling. I will admit that I look forward to junk on road trips but am so ready for real food by the time we're back!

  17. REALLY?! You preferred KS over CO? I live in KS and I would take CO ANYDAY. that's funny.
My fast food of choice is usually pizza. Or maybe Subway. Anything with copious amounts of melted cheese. lol

Delicious giveaway on my blog...have you entered yet?

  18. I'd have to pick chick-fil-a, for sure.

I'm horrible on long car rides... I randomly get motion sickness, so I take medicine just to be safe, and it makes me drowsy so I sleep most of the time, but when I get to that point where I can't get comfortable, I get grumpy. =/

  19. I know Yoga is sooo good for you but I get SO bored when I do it! I do really like Pilates though!
Good idea with the separately bagged salad! I'll have to try that because I hate soggy salad!

  20. We usually choose Sheetz if we can (Western PA convenience store with the best made-to-order food), but if we have to get real fast food, we usually pick Long John Silver's or Taco Bell.

I'm actually a horrible distance driver because moving vehicles lull me to sleep. It's a little scary for a passenger.

  21. love me some wendy's...mcdonalds too haha.
Yeah I know what you mean about Yoga...but I found a kind that's super athletic / movement oriented that felt more like a workout!

You must have totally gone through different parts of colorado and kansas than I did - I had the exact opposite opinion =)
