Taper Thoughts & Oil Free Oatmeal Cookies

WORKOUT:
5 mile run
30 min weights - chest/biceps
30 min abs class
15 min STRETCHING

My IT band is still feeling good. As long as I keep using The Stick and stretching lots I will be fine. Not worried about it. :)

This week is NO FUN! Why? Because now it is time to taper for REAL. I have a hard time saying NO to myself. After Wednesday, NO running, NO spinning, NO leg exercises, and don't even think about looking at that elliptical. Not to mention the sparse miles I get to run tomorrow and Wednesday.

I can keep doing weight work on my upper body, but where am I going to get my cardio while giving my legs a break? This is not the time to start swimming again or go to kickboxing etc. This is when I have to remind myself EVERYDAY that I worked hard and I need to take a break. Still REALLY hard for me. I am crazy. I am lame. I know... I hear it all the time.
Does anyone else have a hard time with this!?! I LOVE marathons, but tapering and taking it easy afterwards is the tough part. Give me some more hard training, I would TOTALLY rather do that.

And maybe I am a total retard/paranoid freak but I notice a difference in my body when I take extra days off. Besides the fact that I truly ENJOY working out 6 days a week, I like feeling TONED and the MENTAL BENEFIT I get everyday.

Plus, when I workout I eat better. I make better choices, eat on more of a schedule with less snacking and get more protein in that day. Days off I tend to eat a little TOO MUCH.

If you ever feel like this, PLEASE share so that Ben won't think I am so wacky!

"Holley!!! That was like WAY too much information!" I know, I'm sorry. DONE!

Recent eats included... yummy Swai fish with Salad (Spinach & Arugula with apples, craisins, walnuts and Anne's Lite Raspberry Vinaigrette).

And some Oil Free Oatmeal Cookies. I adapted this recipe for my own evil purposes.

OIL FREE OATMEAL COOKIES

1 C. Whole Wheat Flour
2 1/2 C. Old Fashioned Oats (I added more because I felt it was too moist.)
1/2 tsp. Baking Soda
1/2 tsp. Baking Powder
1/2 tsp. Salt
1 TB Cinnamon (And then some, that is why my cookies look darker. I LOVE cinnamon.)
1/2 tsp. Nutmeg

1/2 C. Honey
1/2 C. Applesauce
1 TB Molasses
1 Egg
1 tsp. Vanilla

1/2 C. Raisin/Craisins (I did a little of both.)
Optional: 1/2 C. Walnuts (I left these out.)

Go here to check out the mixing and baking info. I didn't change that part.

***Important Note: Since these have no oil in them, make sure you give your baking sheets a quick spray before you put your cookies on, so they won't stick.***

Next time I make these I will cut down the honey a little. The applesauce gives it some added sweetness, so I don't think it needs that much. But if you haven't, "LOST YOUR TASTEBUDS" like Ben likes to tell me, then you will probably think it is just right the way it is. :)

I made them for some friends that came over and everybody loved them! We snacked on them with sliced apples and Ben said both together was like eating apple pie, which gave me a pretty GREAT idea. I will probably be whipping that up soon. :)

Do you change recipes all the time like me?!

Do you HATE taking days off? Or do you LOVE it!?!

(PS. I do
NOT judge. I am very aware that I am a crazy woman. Ben reminds me all the time.)

(PPS. I don't have an eating/workout disorder. These are just thoughts that bounce around in my head. I am just keeping it real.)

  1. I'm not a fan of taking days off either, I didn't do much exercise or running after running my half marathon, I was kinda in a rut, because I was having knee pain for the first time ever and I didn't feel like doing anything. But come January you bet my butt was ready to go! I know that I need rest days but I still feel like I should do something! lol

  2. On my days off, I also eat too much of too many bad foods. I can eat 2 dozen cookies in one sitting, but if I just worked out, I'll have celery or something. I know, I'm with you, it's weird!

  3. I change recipies constantly! I always add lots of vegetables and use sprays of oil instead of Tbsp or tsp in the bottom of a pan. It all tastes the same and I have adverse effects if something is too oily.

I feel you on the days off thing. My absolute rest day that I do nothing at all is Friday and it is hard every time. I am new to running and it is still horrendous!

Great recipe I will try it for sure mostly because I have all of the ingredients on hand :)

  4. Sorry I realized how that sounded like running was horrendous and that isn't how I feel it is the days off that are horrendous...faux pas!

  5. I'm exactly the same way. On my rest days I feel like I'm "taking the day off" in EVERYTHING--including making healthy food choices. It's so bizarre but you're not alone. Tapering is hard, mentally. It seems like you should be doing something, but REST. You've done all the training already :)

  6. I had this great comment... and then my internet shut down. Oh, technology.

    So...

I am in no way an exercise queen like you are; I am just now getting back into working out (in any way!) after not for, well, a good chunk of time and two kids. haha. But I definitely eat better and less when I work out. When I don't, I sit around more and eat crappier food. And buy crappier food. So tell Ben he's crazy. :)

And I always, always change recipes, haha. I LOVE to do that.

Good luck on your marathon, I think that's awesome! I'm just going to sit here and eat junk food because I've jacked up my knee and I'm not sure what to do about it so I'm icing it and I will eat junk food. lol. Or junkier than not.... because let's face it, that crap is expensive and we is po'! :)

  8. I almost ALWAYS change recipes. I'm excited to try this one.

And...I'm usually a much better eater/runner, but being 5 months pregnant has put a bit of a damper on both. I've still been running every day, just not as much as I'd like. Ah well...it's worth it. :)

  9. I have THE hardest time taking days off and tapering! The only thing that helps me mentally get through it is understanding that rest and taper days are the result of the VERY HARD WORK that I have done previously leading up to them and that during these days my body is actually getting stronger. All the microscopic tissue damage I caused during my workouts gets repaired and my muscles become stronger on days I rest.

So in my crazy mind rest=stronger! faster! more awesome!!

Hope this helps! You are going to rock out on your marathon!

  10. I am definitely ALWAYS changing my recipes up.

and I understand how hard it is to take days off...but just think...you worked so hard and earned those days off so you can run this weekend and totally appreciate how much you are going to ROCK your marathon :)

  11. I tend to eat worse when I have a rest day... it's like when I work out I don't want to ruin my calorie burn... but if I didn't work out... I don't "ruin" it, how screwed is that logic?! ;)

Can't wait to hear about your marathon... You will ROCK it!!

also... all your yummy cookie recipes are killing me... I tend (aka ALWAYS) overeat treats if I have them in the house. So... I'll just drool on my lap top screen instead.

  12. I don't like taking days off either! I love the way I feel after a workout, and when I don't get that I'm not really myself. It totally gets to me!

  13. I love taking Saturday as a rest day (aka no working out) but tapering is REALLY hard for me mentally...I feel like I am throwing months of training out the window by taking it easy even though, deep down, I know it's not true. Good luck with the rest of your taper!

  14. OMG I think we are secret workout soul mates. I absolutely cringe at the thought of a day off. (stupid, stupid, stupid). I am still yet to officially "taper". My taper includes at least 4 miles, or 60 minutes on the ellipical....YIKES!

My first marathon is coming up so hopefully I can figure it out without going crazy or eating 10,000 calories a day. Best of luck lady!

  15. I too notice on my "off days" I tend to indulge a little more - which is soooo opposite of what it should be lol! gotta work on that!!
